The origins of M-Sound started with two small recording studios,
Gabriel Recording and Millennium Music Productions. Gabriel recording
was owned and operated by Shawn Leahy and others, and Millennium Music
Productions was owned and operated by Kevin Walker. In June 1999 we
merged to become Millennium Sound Studios: a 2400 square foot facility
we retrofitted into the 4th floor above Mitchell & Ness at 13th &
Walnut. Millennium became a well-known studio in Philadelphia as
hundreds of recordings and film mixes were done at Millennium. After 5
years in center city, the building was sold and we were forced to find
a new location.
In June 2004, we found a new space in a warehouse in south
Philadelphia. We moved Millennium, studs, glass, insulation, and all
to 38 Jackson Street and started construction on a whole new facility.
As we started to build the studio, we realized that with a new facility
and a new location, it was time for a new name. A shortened version of
Millennium Sound Studios now became M-Sound. Each room was
meticulously constructed; our equipment has been extensively upgraded.
Of course, what really makes a studio is people, not gear. Various
engineers have come and gone over the years, but Shawn and Kevin are
still here. Even Pre is still lurking about ready to track some vocals
for your mix tape. The vibe and the mixes are better than ever!
